Heralding the official return of seriously big hair was model Kaia Gerber who stormed the Valentino AW18 couture runway with a bouffant large enough to rival Marie Antoinette.
Sashaying her way down the catwalk at the Hotel Rothschild in front of a celeb filled FROW complete with Tracee Ellis Ross, the model ingenue topped her candyfloss pink feather ball gown with astonishingly large hair.
Created by backstage legend and fashion industry face, hairstylist Guido Palau, the OTT look was all about more is more height and XXL extensions.Palau nonchalantly described the gravity-defying style as ‘big hair’, using wigs dyed to colour match the model’s own hair by Josh Wood to create the 60s-inspired hairstyle.
Although just seven of the models were adorned with the outrageous wigs, the amount of work that went into them is remarkable.
Wood took to Instagram to break down the intricate process that went into creating the ginormous hair, which included no less than ’50 wigs, 3700 miles, 250 colour processes, 150 hours of prep, 11 team members, 7 models and one inspiration’. So not much.
Kaia’s prescribed hair colour? ‘Dark chocolate bourbon-y base, with soft rich tea ends.’
Adding a Barbarella-esque extravagance to a collection filled with gold-trimmed capes, garish baroque prints and more maribou than Ru Paul’s dressing room, if there was a way to out extra couture week, Valentino just did it.
